Where Screen Meets Cure: Abyssology and the Rise of the Data Defenders

We live in a world where screens dominate our lives. We wake up to them, work on them, and wind down with them. But what if those screens aren't just showing us information, but actively shaping our reality? What if the data that flows through those screens is being used to manipulate, exploit, and even harm us?

This is the reality we face in the digital age, a reality where data abysses – those gaps and distortions in the information landscape – can have devastating consequences for individuals and communities.

Why We Wrote the Book:

As the author of "Data Defenders," Athena Justice experienced the destructive power of data abysses firsthand. She's seen families torn apart, lives derailed, and voices silenced by the misuse of data. She witnessed the heartbreaking consequences of a system that often prioritizes profit over people, leaving the most vulnerable to fend for themselves in a treacherous digital world.

That's why she wrote this book – to expose the dangers of data abysses, to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools to protect themselves, and to inspire citizen screen respecs for data justice. And to help the next generation learn about these dangers, we've created a companion coloring book for kids ages 6-12 called "My Creation Paws And Claws Balance Jaws: A Coloring Book Adventure to Stay Safe in the Super, Best Interest Half-Smartphone World."  This fun and engaging book helps children understand the importance of online safety and data protection in a way that's easy to grasp.

Unabyssology: The Science of Data Defense:

Unabyssology is the study and practice of identifying, analyzing, and mitigating data abysses. It's about understanding how data can be used to manipulate and exploit, and developing strategies to prevent such harm.

Citizen Data Adjusters are the practitioners of Unabyssology, the guardians of our digital lives. They are skilled in data analysis, digital security, and advocacy, using their expertise to defend against online threats and empower individuals to take control of their data. Think of it like what NASA is doing with citizen mapping apps, where everyday people contribute to creating a more accurate and complete picture of our world. Citizen Data Adjusters do the same for the digital landscape, identifying and addressing gaps and distortions in information that can harm individuals and communities.  They are like insurance adjusters for "life wrecks," those situations where data abysses lead to real-world consequences like identity theft, financial fraud, or online exploitation. Just as insurance adjusters assess damage and help people recover from car accidents, Citizen Data Adjusters help individuals navigate the aftermath of data-related harm, documenting, preventing, and even using those experiences to improve the digital landscape for everyone. They help to identify those "missing data points" that can make all the difference in preventing future "life wrecks."

Making Independent Information Security Accessible for All:

One of the core principles of Unabyssology is accessibility. We believe that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves access to the tools and resources they need to protect themselves in the digital world.

That's why we're developing initiatives like the WAiW11 call center – an emergency hotline for individuals facing data-related crises. We envision a future where everyone has access to on-demand support from trained Citizen Data Adjusters, who can help them navigate complex situations, secure their data, and reclaim their narratives.

Unlocking Unexchange-abilities:

In a world where data is often treated as a commodity, Unabyssology seeks to unlock "unexchange-abilities" – those aspects of our lives that should never be bought, sold, or manipulated. This includes our identities, our relationships, and our fundamental right to control our own narratives.

The 80/20 Divide:

When we turn on our TVs or go online, we're bombarded with information. But how much of that information is truly objective and unbiased? As a statistician, Athena estimates that roughly 80% of the data we encounter is versus-based, meaning it's presented in an adversarial context, often with the intent to persuade or manipulate.

This highlights the importance of developing critical thinking skills and data literacy, so we can discern truth from falsehood and make informed decisions.

The Best Defense is an Abyssology Offense:

We can't simply wait for data abysses to appear and then react. We need a proactive approach, an Unabyssology offense, to identify potential risks, analyze data for inconsistencies, and take preventative measures to protect ourselves and our communities.

The Economic Impact of Unabyssology:

Unabyssology isn't just about protecting our privacy and security; it's also about safeguarding our economic well-being. Data breaches, identity theft, and online fraud can have devastating financial consequences for individuals and families. By preventing these harms, Unabyssology can help people save significant amounts of money and build a more secure financial future.

Where Screen Meets Cure:

Citizen Data Adjuster Science is where screen meets cure. It's where technology is used to empower, protect, and heal. It's where we reclaim our narratives, defend our digital freedom, and build a safer, more just digital world for all.

Join the Call:

We invite you to join the Data Defender movement. Educate yourself about data abysses, support the Universal Basic Data Voice, and become an advocate for data justice. Together, we can create a digital world where everyone has a voice and every story matters.
