In today's world, many families find themselves caught in what feels like a Digital Wild West—a frontier filled with both amazing opportunities and hidden dangers. Like pioneers crossing uncharted territory, parents, grandparents, and children navigate screens, apps, and algorithms that weren't designed with family wellbeing in mind.
This challenge is what inspired our upcoming book, "Mind Chaps & Pixel Riptides: Taming the Digital Wild West," that was released on April 25, 2025.

Born from Real Experience
The inspiration for this book came during a simple mountain bike ride through Forest Park in Saint Louis. As I pedaled along the trails, a deer crossed slowly in front of me. Three more stood grazing peacefully in the woods as I passed by. Later, emerging near the museum, I spotted a Cardinal landing on a car's passenger window, pecking at "himself" in the mirror.
This striking contrast became the perfect metaphor for our digital dilemma: Are we like the deer—present, connected, aware of our surroundings? Or are we more like the Cardinal—fighting with reflections, mistaking images for reality, trapped in endless digital mirrors?
More Than Just Another Digital Parenting Book
"Mind Chaps & Pixel Riptides" isn't about fear or restriction. It's about equipping families with protective wisdom (Mind Chaps) while learning to spot dangerous digital currents (Pixel Riptides). Much like audio riptides or physical riptides that can dirve listeners or pull swimmers away from firm ground or shore, digital experiences can create currents that sweep or push family members into isolated digital worlds.
Through animal wisdom, practical strategies, and faith-based insights, the book addresses:
How AI systems shape family connections without our awareness
Creating "Leader Lights" that guide decisions in digital spaces
Building a "Digital Posse" of supporters for your family's journey
Establishing "Family Resilience Metrics" that measure what actually matters
Creating a "Digital Homestead" where faith and technology coexist
Championing those often left behind in digital spaces
Theme Song and Interactive Game
We're excited to announce two special companions to the book:
"Taming the Digital Wild" - Our catchy new theme song (in the middle of the above video) captures the spirit of the book in music form! You can listen to it now. With memorable lyrics and a toe-tapping melody, it's the perfect soundtrack for your family's digital journey.
"Digital Trailblazer" - Test your digital navigation skills with our new interactive game! While we're still working out some bugs, this family-friendly game lets players practice spotting Pixel Riptides and applying Mind Chaps in fun, engaging scenarios. Stay tuned for the final release!
A Special Release Date
We chose April 25th for our book release-a date that also marks National Parental Alienation Awareness Day. This timing was intentional, as our book addresses how both legal and digital systems can sometimes fragment family connections rather than strengthen them.
Parental alienation is said to be when one parent encourages a child to disengage from or denigrate the other parent. Representing not just one nuclear family member loss, but one with multi-member losses and explained by many as one of the most painful examples of how families can be torn apart. Our book offers natural paths toward healing and connection, even remotely amid complex family dynamics.
Coming Soon: The PHb Serendipity Scale
"Mind Chaps & Pixel Riptides" also introduces readers to the PHb Serendipity Scale—a revolutionary tool for measuring and balancing digital experiences. While the book provides the foundation like others, including MIT, a comprehensive PHb Serendipity Scale implementation guide will roll out over the coming quarters.
This scale helps families gauge when digital experiences become too "sensory ultra-salty"-too overwhelming, too addictive, too disconnecting-and points toward healthier engagement. The comprehensive PHb Serendipity Scale implementation guide is now available alongside the book.

The book uses the metaphor of the Digital Wild West to describe the current challenges families face navigating the digital world. It aims to equip families with "Mind Chaps" (protective wisdom) to avoid "Pixel Riptides" (dangerous digital currents) rather than promoting fear or complete restriction of technology.
