"Mind Chaps & Pixel Riptides": A New Digital Family Guide for Navigating the Digital Wild West

Updated: Jun 10

"Mind Chaps & Pixel Riptides" book cover features a child with a glowing tablet, set against a soft, dreamy background with blue tones.

Taming the Digital Wild West

In today's world, many families find themselves caught in what feels like a Digital Wild West—a frontier filled with both amazing opportunities and hidden dangers. Like pioneers crossing uncharted territory, parents, grandparents, and children navigate screens, apps, and algorithms that weren't designed with family wellbeing in mind.

This challenge is what inspired our upcoming book, "Mind Chaps & Pixel Riptides: Taming the Digital Wild West," that was released on April 25, 2025.

Deer graze in a forest on the left, while a cardinal perches on a car mirror on the right. The scene is monochromatic with a calm mood.

Born from Real Experience

The inspiration for this book came during a simple mountain bike ride through Forest Park in Saint Louis. As I pedaled along the trails, a deer crossed slowly in front of me. Three more stood grazing peacefully in the woods as I passed by. Later, emerging near the museum, I spotted a Cardinal landing on a car's passenger window, pecking at "himself" in the mirror.

This striking contrast became the perfect metaphor for our digital dilemma: Are we like the deer—present, connected, aware of our surroundings? Or are we more like the Cardinal—fighting with reflections, mistaking images for reality, trapped in endless digital mirrors?

More Than Just Another Digital Parenting Book

"Mind Chaps & Pixel Riptides" isn't about fear or restriction. It's about equipping families with protective wisdom (Mind Chaps) while learning to spot dangerous digital currents (Pixel Riptides). Much like audio riptides or physical riptides that can dirve listeners or pull swimmers away from firm ground or shore, digital experiences can create currents that sweep or push family members into isolated digital worlds.

Through animal wisdom, practical strategies, and faith-based insights, the book addresses:

  • How AI systems shape family connections without our awareness

  • Creating "Leader Lights" that guide decisions in digital spaces

  • Building a "Digital Posse" of supporters for your family's journey

  • Establishing "Family Resilience Metrics" that measure what actually matters

  • Creating a "Digital Homestead" where faith and technology coexist

  • Championing those often left behind in digital spaces

Theme Song and Interactive Game

We're excited to announce two special companions to the book:

"Taming the Digital Wild" - Our catchy new theme song (in the middle of the above video) captures the spirit of the book in music form! You can listen to it now. With memorable lyrics and a toe-tapping melody, it's the perfect soundtrack for your family's digital journey.

"Digital Trailblazer" - Test your digital navigation skills with our new interactive game! While we're still working out some bugs, this family-friendly game lets players practice spotting Pixel Riptides and applying Mind Chaps in fun, engaging scenarios. Stay tuned for the final release!

A Special Release Date

We chose April 25th for our book release-a date that also marks National Parental Alienation Awareness Day. This timing was intentional, as our book addresses how both legal and digital systems can sometimes fragment family connections rather than strengthen them.

Two scenes show family and technology: "Generational Connection" with happy exchanges, and "Parental Alienation" with a sad, distant child.

Parental alienation is said to be when one parent encourages a child to disengage from or denigrate the other parent. Representing not just one nuclear family member loss, but one with multi-member losses and explained by many as one of the most painful examples of how families can be torn apart. Our book offers natural paths toward healing and connection, even remotely amid complex family dynamics.

Coming Soon: The Super Serendipity Scale

"Mind Chaps & Pixel Riptides" also introduces readers to the Super Serendipity Scale—a revolutionary tool for measuring and balancing digital experiences. While the book provides the foundation like others, including MIT, a comprehensive Super Serendipity Scale implementation guide will roll out over the coming quarters.

This scale helps families gauge when digital experiences become too "sensory ultra-salty"-too overwhelming, too addictive, too disconnecting-and points toward healthier engagement. The comprehensive Super Serendipity Scale implementation guide is now available alongside the book.

What is the central idea behind the book "Mind Chaps & Pixel Riptides: Taming the Digital Wild West"?

The book uses the metaphor of the Digital Wild West to describe the current challenges families face navigating the digital world. It aims to equip families with "Mind Chaps" (protective wisdom) to avoid "Pixel Riptides" (dangerous digital currents) rather than promoting fear or complete restriction of technology. The core idea is to help families develop discernment and use technology wisely to foster connection and wellbeing, drawing parallels to the natural world and offering faith-based insights.

What are "Mind Chaps" and "Pixel Riptides" as described in the book?

"Mind Chaps" represent the protective wisdom and practical strategies families can develop to navigate the digital world safely and intentionally. This includes things like establishing guidelines, fostering critical thinking about online content, and promoting healthy digital habits. "Pixel Riptides" are the dangerous and often unseen digital currents or experiences that can pull family members into isolation or negative online behaviors, such as addictive apps, overwhelming content, or harmful online interactions.

How does the book address the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on family connections?

The book explores how AI systems can subtly influence family dynamics without conscious awareness. It encourages families to be mindful of how algorithms and AI-driven platforms shape their interactions and provides strategies to maintain authentic connection despite these influences. The concept of "Leader Lights" is introduced to help families make conscious decisions in digital spaces influenced by AI.

What are some of the practical tools or concepts introduced in "Mind Chaps & Pixel Riptides" to help families navigate the digital landscape?

The book introduces several practical concepts, including:

  • Leader Lights: Guiding principles or values that help families make informed decisions about technology use.

  • Digital Posse: A network of supportive individuals or resources that families can rely on for navigating digital challenges.

  • Family Resilience Metrics: Ways to measure what truly matters in family wellbeing beyond just screen time, focusing on connection and overall health.

  • Digital Homestead: Creating a home environment where faith and technology can coexist harmoniously.

  • PHb Serendipity Scale: A tool for measuring and balancing digital experiences to identify when they become overwhelming or disconnecting, guiding families towards healthier engagement.

How does the book relate to National Parental Alienation Awareness Day, and what does it offer in this context?

The book was intentionally released on National Parental Alienation Awareness Day (April 25th) to highlight how both legal and digital systems can sometimes contribute to fracturing family connections. It offers "natural paths toward healing and connection," even remotely, in families experiencing complex dynamics, suggesting ways to bridge divides and foster understanding amidst digital influences.

Tell me more about the theme song "Taming the Digital Wild" and the interactive game "Digital Trailblazer."

The theme song, "Taming the Digital Wild," is designed to capture the book's spirit in a catchy and memorable way, acting as a soundtrack for the family's digital journey. The lyrics emphasize finding wisdom in the digital world, guided by love and faith, and overcoming the challenges of "pixel riptides." The interactive game, "Digital Trailblazer," is a web-based game where players guide a deer through a digital forest, collecting "Mind Chaps" and avoiding "Pixel Riptides" and distractions symbolized by a cardinal and its reflection. It aims to reinforce the book's metaphors and message of intentional digital navigation in a fun and engaging way for a wide age range.

Where can individuals purchase "Mind Chaps & Pixel Riptides" and find additional resources?

"Mind Chaps & Pixel Riptides" is available for purchase in print, e-book, and accessible formats through major online retailers such as Amazon (just click an image of the book above). Families can also find additional resources, included in a read-aloud guide above in this blog designed to facilitate meaningful discussions about digital wellness between grandparents, parents and children.
